Such is the story of railfanning on donner pass and the union pacific roseville subdivsion. when i pulled into colfax for a snack and to get gas, another eastbound manifest rolled through the town-whereupon it stopped and backed up, all the way through colfax and maybe all the way back down to the yard in roseville for all i know. as i drove down the hill on I-80, i saw one of the eastbound trains which had been waiting in roseville slowly heading uphill in the area around alta. the dead unit on the mixed freight had to be removed and a working locomotive on the intermodal exchanged for the defective one which involved traveling to a crossover west of truckee and testing components of the power added to the mixed freight to make sure things like the alerter and braking systems were up to snuff.įinally, at perhaps 5:00 PM, the higher priority intermodal got underway.
The Z train spent several hours in truckee rendering assistance to the mixed freight's crew, while during all that time trains were stacking up in both roseville and sparks.
It turns out one of the lead units on the mixed freight on track one was busticated, which was the reasons Z-train-boy backed itself up the hill after descending part of what we know as donner pass. it wasn't until i'd waited at Y-gap almost an hour before my friend patrick texted to advise me the westbound intermodal i'd watched on the truckee webcam had reversed itself back up the hill from cisco grove into truckee. After driving from san francisco to colfax and seeing the intermodal train on the left pass through truckee on the webcam, i thought i'd have a good chase down the mountain from somewhere, maybe yuba gap.
